    Death of the Founder

    Fr. Preca died on the feast of St Anne the grandmother of Jesus. He was buried in a crypt at the Central House at Blata l-Bajda.

    Declared as a Venerable

    Dun Gorg is declared venerable by Pope John Paul II at the Vatican after the inexplicable healing of a detached retina of Charles Zammit Endrich which happened in early 1964 was confirmed as miraculous. Endrich’s friend placed a shoelace used by Dun Gorg under his pillow the day before the healing.

    Beatification

    Pope John Paul II in Malta to beatify Fr Preca during an open air Mass at the Floriana Granaries. In the afternoon the Pope prayed before the remains of the Founder and met all the SDC Members at the Central House at Blata l-Bajda.

    Mysteries of Light

    Pope John Paul II  began the 25th anniversary of his pontificate by presented the Church with another five new Mysteries of Light on the public life of Jesus.  Although the Pope did not reveal the source of the new mysteries they can be attribute to Saint George Preca who wrote nearly identical mysteries back in 1957. These were inspired by Jesus as the divine teacher who gives light to the world through his teachings.

    Commemorating the first centenary

    The SDC commemorated its first centenary choosing the motto “To make Jesus known and loved”. The logo for the centenary depicts three falling seed inspired from the parable of the sower. A modified version of this logo was adopted for this website.

    Approval of the Second Miracle

    The Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome approves a second miracle of a scientifically unexplained recovery from liver failure of baby boy in late 2001. This happened when the boy’s parents placed a glove on their son, Eric Catania that was used in Fr Preca’s exhumation. At the age of seven Eric received his first holy communion during the canonisation ceremony.

    Canonisation

    Pope Benedict XVI canonises Blessed George Preca on 3 June in St Peter’s Square Rome. The Pope said that George Preca was “a friend of Jesus”, was a “priest totally dedicated to evangelisation” and “a faithful echo of the world of God”.

    Declared unofficial patron saint of podcasts

    Two trainee priests from Oscott College in Birmingham, have decided to adopt Saint George Preca as an unofficial patron saint of podcasts. They hope that his example may inspire and encourage others to use modern communication media to spread the Gospels to a global audience.
