Korçë – Southeastern Albania
Foundation
The Society of Christian Doctrine – Preca Community established itself in Korçë, in April 1993 as a missionary group. We were invited to open and run an English-speaking middle high school. As a result, three Members were sent to start this ambitious mission. In September 1993, Preca College www.precacollege.org opened its doors to its first intake of fifty students.
Opening a Centre of the SDC was a priority from the very beginning. However, this was not possible before the Members learnt the language and built a residence. In the meantime much preparatory work was carried out: making connections with the people, providing catechism lessons to those who were preparing themselves to receive Confirmation and preparing adults for Baptism.
Early in 1995 the residence was ready, and on 19 March of the same year we formally opened our Centre.
Mission Today
Today the Centre is a hive of evangelisation and catechesis, as well as of human promotion and socialisation. Many of the young people come from an environment that is foreign to religion.
Korçë is lacking a residential priest but the Members take care spiritually of the small Catholic community in Korçë.
Preca College has continued to build a very respectable reputation, considered to be an excellent educational institution in Korçë, and one of the best in Albania.
There are many challenges but also opportunities in Albania. The SDC is committed to maintaining our presence and is working towards Preca College being administered by locals.
